Schnitzel&Things update

As already posted last week, there is a new street vendor in town that sells Schnitzel as sandwich or platter. They also won a Vendy award for the best rookie of the year and that seemed to give their business even more boost. I went there again today and the line was huuuuuuge (see picture). I had to wait at least 30 min in line to get my pork schnitzel platter but it really was worth every single minute. The food is awesome although I’m still missing the Lingonberries ;)

Check out this video on CNBC. Oleg Voss, the owner of Schnitzel&Things, apparently used to work for Raiffeisen in Vienna as financial analyst before he lost his job there and moved back to Brooklyn. I can only say: Thank you Luigi for kicking that guy out. Because of you I now get great Schnitzel here in the city. :)

This July a guy from the Ukraine who lived in NYC for the most of his life and spent a year in Vienna came up with the Schnitzeltruck. A street vendor truck that sells Schnitzel and Bratwurst. The regular choices for Schnitzel are Chicken, Pork or Cod Schnitzel which you can get as Sandwich in a ciabatta bread or as Platter with 2 sides. Sometimes they have the real Austrian Wiener Schnitzel from veal as special. Since they are in Downtown close to my office on Thursdays I had to get a Schnitzel today. I was looking forward to eating a real veal Schnitzel but unfortunately they didn’t have it today. So I got the Pork Schnitzel Platter with French Fries and Cucumber Salad. Other side dishes are Austrian Potato Salad, Braised Sauerkraut, Green Lentil Salad, Beets and Feta Salad and Mesclun Salad. The Pork Schnitzel tasted really authentic and I was also very happy with the Cucumber Salad although they had a little heavy hand with the garlic there.

What I really was missing on the Menu was Lingonberries or Cranberries. Only a little bit of sweetness accentuates the full flavors of sweet and sour in an Austrian Wiener Schnitzel dish. I am actually surprised that a guy that lived in Vienna for a year is not offering that as condiment but maybe a little email will solve that little flaw. Overall a nice Schnitzel experience for lunch that brought some homey feeling to my heart and stomach :)

Check out their blog for their weekly schedule and their daily announcements on twitter.

UPDATE:

Schnitzeltruck won the Vendys “Rookie of the year” – Award.

George Foreman Grill

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

My newest addition to my small kitchen is a George Forman Grill. It is a small electric grill but it really does the job and I am very happy with it. If it is a nice juicy Rib Eye Steak with some green string beans or Salmon on creamy vegetable pasta or even sausages everything is ready in a couple of minutes without using one drop of oil.

re: Eating around the office

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

There is so many more places to eat around our office that I haven’t mentioned in my post back in May. Only god knows how much longer we will be at our current location but I want to add one of my newest favorites to the list:

Zeytuna is really close to our office and has a lot of choices for food. You can create your own custom and fresh salad at the salad bar or you can get some custom nice warm stuff at the buffet or you can even go to the grill and get your fresh prepared burger or sandwich. You can also get grilled tuna or salmon if you wish or you can hit the sushi bar if you are graving for raw fish. I’m glad I found out about this place today and it’s gonna be one of my first options on my list if I want to go for quick take-out food.

Never ever order from Quiznos online

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Yeah I know, the subs from Quiznos are usually just alright but I was hungry last Monday and didn’t really had a preference of what to order so I thought I just try out their online delivery service. Their website has a nice design and is easy to use and I was looking forward to get my sandwich (sub actually is the abbreviation for “Submarine Sandwich” and the common known chain restaurant besides Quiznos is Subway). I got a nice confirmation email that my order has been received and that the delivery time is going to be 30 min. But the order never showed up. I waited for 60 min and then tried to call their number (the number that showed up on my email) but the number was unreachable. As a replacement I got some nice Indian food delivered from my favorite place which was delicious and made me forget about the worries with Quiznos. Until I checked my credit card bill today where the charge from Quiznos for the never received sub showed up and made me call my credit card company to dispute the charge. That was the first and the last time that I’ve tried Quiznos online delivery service.

Food riddle

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Since my last post was abt food I thought I give u a little riddle to solve I brought with me from Memphis. What would you say is that thing on the picture below?

img_4854Hint nr 1: it’s not pizza.

Hint nr 2: it’s on the menu of “Flying Saucer” a nice beer place in Memphis, TN.

Post your thoughts as a comment.

The trip to Memphis and the BBQ World Cup was a lot of fun but I’m still sorting out my pictures. So hang on, I will post an entry soon…

Where to eat around the office?

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

This is a post for all the visitors out there that are coming to our office here in downtown Manhattan and would like to have some nice lunch.

There are plenty of food stands on the streets around the office where you can cheap and sometimes decent food as well but in my opinion the best deal you can get is the 3 bucks Falafel sandwich at Sam’s Falafel which is located on the square between liberty and cedar street just one block away from the office. The sandwich is a little bit messy to eat but very delicious.

Another nice spot for Mediterranean food is Alfanoose but you should go there before 12 or after 1 pm to avoid standing in a long line. My favorite is the Chicken Shawarma sandwich. Highly recommended.

If you are more into Japanese food and sushi there are two options close to the office. Sushi ala kawa on maiden lane where you can sit down and have some nice and freshly prepared sushi or a place called Sushi! which is located on the corner of Cortlandt and Broadway and is more a take away place where you can get Sushi boxes or noodle soups. I recommend the Beef Udon there.

For Indian food I can highly recommend Baluchi’s on Greenwich. It’s a bit of a walk but the delicious dishes that are awaiting you are worth the walk. My recommendation there are the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Saag Panir.

The best options for Chinese food are in my opinion located in China town which might be to far to go to for a lunch break but if you want to have a decent option for quick Chinese food your place to go is Ho yip which offers a buffet for take out and is  located on Liberty street two blocks from the office.

If you are more into Burger and Sandwiches my recommendations around the office are Suspenders, Pound&Pence and the Heartland Brewery  at South Street Seaport. Highly recommended at the Heartland brewery is the Smoked Chicken Salad. At all these 3 spots you got the option of having some nice beer going along with your food but don’t tell anyone in the office since you know it is a absolute no-go to have beers for lunch in the US.

For Thai food one place you can try is Lemongrass Grill on William St which is just 4 blocks from the office. It’s decent food for a fair price.

If you want to go for a healthy option and just want to get some fruits or yogurt you can always go to a deli around the office or to my favorite place Whole Food Market on Greenwich.

This is just a small selection of lunch options around the office and there are also of course all the Fast Food chains near the office like McDonalds, Burger King, Subway, KFC, etc and several Pizza to-go places but it’s up to you if you really want to go for that option.

Easter in Washington DC, day 1

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

As many of you know I used the time over Easter to do some sight seeing in DC. Instead of flying we did a more comfortable 2 and a half hour train ride using amtrak. Once arrived there the first surprise to me was that DC has a very reliable and clean metro system. Coming from NYC it seems like a different world. The first day we used to see everything around “The Mall“. For everyone here that hasn’t been to DC so far, The National Mall is the park in the center of Washington DC between the capitol and the Lincoln memorial. Everything is in walking distance and we had a close look on the Washington memorial, the Lincoln memorial, the Korean War Veterans memorial, the Vietnam War Veterans memorial and of course the White House. For lunch we have been to the award winning cafe of Michel Richard called “Central“. I had an excellent onion soup and from my perspective a little bit overpriced lobster burger. If you like burgers and you don’t care about the price I would definitely go there. After lunch we stood in line in front of the National Archives to get a view on the declaration of independence, the constitution  and the bill of rights. One good thing about Washington DC is that all the museums are free but the downside is that you have to stand in line on a Easter weekend. But then again you can enjoy the Cherry blossom only this time of the year :)

These are the pictures of our first day in DC. More to come…

Artisanal

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

I have been at a nice casual French restaurant in midtown tonight called “Artisanal” which is a place you want to go if you are into Cheese. They got a own menu for their over 250 handcrafted Cheeses from all over Europe and the US. We tried a couple and I have to say although I’m not really big into – what I used to call bad milk when I was little – those were really the best Cheeses I had so far. I also had onion soup and an excellent Filet Mignon. The meal was completed by a decent Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley and the best part of the whole night was that it was not on my expenses ;)

Wiener Schnitzel

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

This is the nice surprise that was already waiting for me last Thursday night when I got back from a busy week in Toronto. One of my favorit dishes….delicious :)
