Monday, November 2nd, 2009

This is the weather forecast for this week. One of the reasons I moved to NY and not London when I had the option.

img_9269Happy belated 70th birthday, Papa! I hope I will be as cool and fit as you, should I ever become that old.

My favorite time of the year

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

September is my favorite month of the year in the city. It is not as hot and humid in August but it is mostly sunny and in the lower 7os with a light breeze. Same goes for the last weekend. I decided to use Sunday for a nice walk from my place all the way up to central park and read a bit in the sun. I just started to read the new Dan Brown – “The Lost Symbol” and I really like it so far. Since I know you guys like to see pictures here are a few that I took on my way to central park.

Apotheke

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

IMG_0455The German word for pharmacy. That’s a bar in China Town and not just a random bar it is a really nice cocktail bar with special cocktails. Cocktails of a kind that you have never tasted before. Founded by an Austrian, Apotheke serves cocktails like Strawberry Fennel or Lavender Raspberry and they really taste awesome. They try to take oils and flavors into their cocktails which make them special. And all their staff wears white coats as they would be working in a real pharmacy :) . Whenever you come to NYC and you are up for cocktails you should really try this place. It is not easy to find but just aim for the red sign with the “9″ on it. Just make sure you are there early as they pretend to be having a “private party” where you have to be on the list if you try to get in there after 10 pm.

Next door (on the left hand side) is actually the best Vietnamese place which we also had to try out tonight. Awesome! Nice and fresh food. Highly recommended!

The story of the exploding ketchup bottle

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

A regular Friday evening. Some friends and I hit a Irish pub at Gramercy park to have some beers and burgers. A really nice and old place and the burgers were supposed to be awesome. But here it comes: We were ready to go after the waitress put those huge juicy burgers on our table and I grabbed the bottle of ketchup. You would think a common bottle of Heinz tomato ketchup. Common? Well not like that. I still don’t know what happened exactly but after I opened that bottle of ketchup it was like I would have opened a champagne bottle. The whole thing was under immense pressure and the ketchup just came out like crazy. I and the guys next to me were full of ketchup. I was really scared that they are going to kill me since they were wearing nice bright pants that were ruined at least for that night. I was just happy that I was wearing a black shirt as I would have looked like a mass murderer if I would have worn a white shirt full of ketchup. It took us all a couple of beers to get over that shock and I guess I would have enjoyed the burger a little bit more without that event. I got it at least for free. Be careful with those ketchup bottles!

Bday in Austria

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Although flights were not cheap I made a quick decision to celebrate my bday in Austria this year. It’s actually the first time for me since I moved to the US that I’m enjoying a summer vacation in Austria. And lying at the pool getting some Vitamin D is actually not too shabby for a nice summer vacation :)

Here some pictures of my small bday party with my parents, sisters, nices and nephews (the bigger party is going to happen today). Way too many candles on the cake (some of those were fake and although I blew my lungs out I couldn’t blow them out).

Visitors (again)

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Since last night I have some visitors from Austria. Two friends of my sister (who denied to visit me so far – that’s a hint, Chrisi :p ) came over and are starting their East coast journey from here. They are staying for 2 nights and will then get a rental car and move on to Boston. I went with them to see Time Square – haven’t been there since my parent’s visit anyway – and the usual suspects like the Toys’R'us, the M&Ms store, etc. After that we had some beers and no burgers since they enjoyed their meal on their flight too much :)

Short trip to Denver

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

I’m back from my short trip to Denver. The meeting with the client went pretty well and it was totally worth to go there although it was painful since I had no direct flight and was connecting through Chicago. Following things to mention:

  • once you are in the Midwest you got a different “class” of ppl on the plane
  • Taxi drivers in Denver just hand you over their GPS and let you enter the destination that you are aiming for
  • The air in Denver is definitely thinner and you can get a nice view of the mountains in clear weather
  • The airport is 32 miles outside of Denver and in the middle of nowhere (someone told me that some landlord got a nice deal by putting it there)
  • 3 out of 4 flights were completely full. Where is the recession?

Next station: Toronto

colorblind or drunk?

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Looking at the designs of some user interfaces out there (including the one of that company I’m currently working for) makes me think if those responsible are either drunk or colorblind. I mean – no offense – but do you really want to have to deal with pink text on gray-greenish background as seen in one example below? But I’ve also seen dark grey text on light grey background before….

Niagara Falls

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

I used some miles to fly up to Toronto last weekend and meet a friend there. We went for clubbing – the night club scene in Toronto is awesome and highly recommended – and also took the about an hour drive to the Niagara Falls. Since it’s one of the touristic attractions it’s of course very commercialized but it’s totally worth to see it. You might wanna see it from the Canadian side though since you got the better view from there. Just compare my pictures with the one on wikipedia and you know why. You should also take a ride with the Maid of the Mist as we did which brings you close to the falls and gets you wet :)
