Memorial Day
May 30th
Monday was Memorial Day (which is always the last Monday of May) in US. On that the day they honor the soldiers who have died in military service for their country and there were of course some speeches going on in Chicago and the following pictures I’ve taken in Grant Park where they put the boots of all the 3,500 soldiers that have died while their duty in Iraq. But I’ve never heard anyone mention that there have died around 65,000 to 70,000 civilians while that war…Anyway this day was historically established to commemorate the US soldiers died in the American Civil War and I can understand that they celebrate this day since then and on the weekend I’ve seen some demonstration going on against this senseless war so nobody can say that all Americans support it. In my opinion every life that ends caused by war is one life too much.
Here are some pictures taken on Memorial Day.
And this is one of Chicago’s famous attractions in the millenium park called “The Bean” which is a 110-ton, highly polished steel monolith shaped like a kidney bean and draws some very cool reflections as you can see on the pictures below:
And whoever told you that money lies on the streets in US was right
Shedd Aquarium Chicago
May 28th
I’ve spent this long weekend in downtown Chicago doing a lot of sightseeing and every sightseeing tour in Chicago has to include the John G. Shedd Aquarium which is supposed to be the largest indoor aquarium on this planet and has a beautiful location at the lake. The right building on the following picture is the Aquarium:
The first thing you’ll see – after standing in line for 1 1/2 hours
– is the 90,000 gallon (340,000 liter) circular tank of the Caribbean Coral Reef:
The Oceanarium with a wall of windows revealing the lake outside has large pools containing sea otters, dolphins and beluga whales.
Especially the Sea otters are very cute
Some dolphins:

Lincoln Park / Lincoln Zoo
May 27th
Yesterday I’ve been to Lincoln Park and Lincoln Zoo. This entry goes especially to Caro as she was asking me for some animal pictures
. I hope you’ll like them.

Pirates of the caribbean – World’s End
May 26th
Having seen the first two parts I had also to see the third part of this story about Caption Jack Sparrow and his friends. One thing you can’t say about World’s End is that Walt Disney Pictures scrimped their special effect budget. This is by far the most stunningly and impressively visual entertainment. However I didn’t like the story but this might also be caused by the fact that I haven’t forgotten most of the story of part II. The funny scenes of part I are here replaced by – what I would say – poor attempts to add some comedy into this action loaded motion picture.
I did however like the previews of the following movies before the main movie:Â “Evan Almighty” which is a kind of new version of Bruce almighty but looked nice, then there will be a new motion picture starring The Rock called The Game Plan and seems to be very funny and then there is the next huge New Line Cinema production called “The Golden Compass” and meant to be a continuation of their success with Lord of the Rings but the preview didn’t impress me that much.
Concluded I would say that if you liked the first two parts and you want to see some imposing scenes and are willing to sit for 168 minutes in your cinema seat then feel free to go. But don’t expect to much from the story.
McDonald’s #1 store
May 26th
On the way from the client site to the center of Chicago there is an original recreation of the first store of McDonald’s which was opened by the founder of the McDonald’s Corporation, Roy Kroc, on April 15, 1955. Those were the times when at McDonald’s fresh potatoes were peeled, sliced, blanched and fried
And now McDonald’s has restaurants in 120 countries all over the world with a revenue of $ 20.460 billion.
This is how the first store of McDonald’s looked like:
Milwaukee / Miller Brewery
May 25th
Last Sunday my colleague and I did a little trip up to Milwaukee which is a 1,5 hour drive by car. The plan was to visit the Miller Lite brewery one of the biggest breweries in this area. It was a nice drive up there all along the highway and once arrived in Milwaukee we recognized that there is not much worth to see so we went directly to the brewery to find out that it is closed on Sundays
. I have checked the web site before but didn’t see that it is closed on Sunday. But I have got some pictures for you.

It’s getting summer in Chicago
May 20th
The question arrived why my blog is called “pumsti goes NYC” although I am in Chicago and writing blog entries out of Chicago. That’s true at the moment I am in Chicago and will stay for another couple of weeks but hopefully I am able to return to NYC afterwards.
Today was a lovely warm summer day in Chicago (77 F / 25 C) and of course we (3 Indian guys and I) have been out all day long and did a long sightseeing tour. Imagine that: pumsti surrounded by 3 Indians walking through Chicago’s street – that’s a kind of a funny picture
Anyway, I’ve got some pictures for you. We’ve been up the Sears tower and the Hancock building, ate one of Chicago’s world famous stuffed pizzas and walked to the beach.
First my rental car for this weekend. (yep, my rental cars are getting bigger
)
View from the Sears tower Skydeck (103 floor) down to Navy pier. The elevator took only 45 seconds to get up the 1,450 ft / 442 mt):
Chicago’s Skyline as seen from the Sears tower skydeck (the biggest building on that picture with the antennas on the top is the Hancock building):
Hancock building (Chicago’s third-tallest building):
There is a very nice restaurant at the top from where you can enjoy a spectacular view:
This is one of the world’s famous stuffed pizzas: (actually, it is more a pie but it was delicious). The funny part in this restaurant was that I had to show my ID to get beer. I didn’t know that I look younger than 21, wahahahah
Last but not least a SHORT
movie of the oak street beach which is in the north of Navy pier and the Hancock building:
Lake Michigan (movie)
May 14th
Another movie today that I took this Sunday driving down Sheridan road along Lake Michigan.
Sunday was – as you can see – a little bit cloudy but still I had a nice time walking along the beach. The guy blocking the view to the lake
is a colleague of mine.
CHICAGO !!!
May 13th
I’ve promised some pictures and here they are. Enjoy! As always comments are appreciated.
We took the Metra (metro) to get from Northbrook to downtown to save the money for the parking space but this turned out to be a bad idea as there was a fire on the track when we tried to return from Chicago in the evening so we hat to take a cab to get back which was even more expensive than a parking space would be for 3 days
Little note for Austrians: These trains here have two floors
This is the view out of the window of the apartment of the cousin of one of my colleagues:

Me and myself on the Washington bridge:
We (Raj, Devesh and I) did the architecture tour with Shoreline Sightseeing:
This tour was going along the Chicago River and offered a lot of sights like the famous Sears tower (which was the worlds tallest building from 1973 to 1998):

Today I’ve been to Chicago downtown again and did the river tour which was really great. Check out this video:
Of course I took a lot of pictures and will post them tomorrow.
