Another sunny weekend in Chicago (having a visitor)

The last weekend Ingrid was visiting me here in Chicago and we had a great time being at the beach and going to downtown.

Baggage status …ctd…

On the fifth day American Airlines finally decided to deliver my bag to my hotel room where I found it today. I’m impressed :D

After an exhausting day at work (you have no clue at all) and the news that Starbucks is raising prices again (second time in 10 month and this time 9 cents per drink) this saves my day. Now I will celebrate with some beers ;)

Baggage status

Which sentence don’t you want to hear after your flight got canceled 3 days ago?

It might be that one:
“At this time we do not have status information for your baggage. Please check back later for an update.”

They still have no clue where my bag is although you should think it should be so easy to go to that plane that stayed on the ground anyway, take out the trolley and return it to where it came from….

Harry Potter and the order of the phoenix

After the fiasco with my canceled vacation I use this sunny weekend in Chicago as “Harry Potter Weekend”; I just watched sequel Nr 5 as movie and bought year 7 which is supposed to be the last one as book. The movie wasn’t too bad and I was warned before that I shouldn’t expect much but as a huge Potter fan I had to watch it of course. I found the story of the book quite exciting but parts of the movie were a little bit flat and drowsy. But I guess the book has always to be better than the movie which means that I would recommend this one only for real Potter-fans which have to watch it to stay part of it ;)

Now let me read the last book to find out how it all ends….”All was well” :D

Vacation in Pensacola, FL canceled :(

What a bad day for me today :( I was supposed to go to Pensacola in Florida to enjoy a couple of sunny days at the beach but I’m back in the hotel in Chicago instead and will work tomorrow. What happened? Well, first the flight got delayed for 1 hour which isn’t a big deal and after we got boarded everything looked fine until the pilot put the engines into idle mode after going to the runway and told us that we might have to wait for another 2 hours as all south bound flights were not allowed to take off due to bad weather conditions. As you know from previous posts I got already used to delayed flights so I was listening to my ipod and looking forward to drinking a couple of cold beers at the beach soon but it should get different. After 1,5 hours standing on the airstrip waiting for take off the pilot announced that we will go back to the gate as they might try a different route to get to Pensacola for which they would have to get more fuel. But once returned to the gate the captain announced after 10 minutes that he is sorry to say that the flight got canceled and we have all to get off the plane which we did. After standing in line in front of the counter at the gate we got told that we have to call American Airlines for re-booking using a special red phones which we would find on a certain location. I found out that there is a 1-800 number to call them as well which I did just to find out that there is no other flight available today and all flights for tomorrow are booked out already and the next available flight would be Saturday morning….. :( So I canceled the whole trip also asking how to get my already checked-in bag back. For that I had to go to their Baggage service counter where they told me that my bag will automatically get delivered to Pensacola on the next available flight although I would stay in Chicago. From Pensacola it will get returned to Chicago and from there it will be hopefully somehow delivered to my hotel. Unbelievable!!! As you can imagine I’m sitting now in my hotel room drinking a couple of cold beers trying to forget what has happened today. Thank god the guy at the reception of the hotel here had mercy after hearing my story and offered to get me some cold beers to my room…..

Explosion in NYC

Today whole NYC was holding breath after hearing news of an explosion in Manhattan near Grand Central Terminal during rush hour (around 6 pm) and first news were reporting a possible terror attack but it turned out to be a steam pipe bursting possible caused by cold water getting into it which was causing a transformer to explode. These pipes were build in 1924 and might not be in the best condition anymore. Sadly one person died and 26 got injured. Within 20 minutes 4×5 blocks were closed and the explosion left a crater on Lexington Ave. with a 25 feet diameter.

Summer in Chicago

Thank god it’s not only summer back in Europe as everyone back in Austria was telling me how hot this weekend has been; it’s also starting to get hot here in Chicago too :)

Remember these pictures are taken in Centinnial park in the north of Chicago on Lake Michigan; it’s not an ocean but it looks and feels like one ;)

Surfing in France

After getting this hint from a friend who was already there this year I’ve booked my vacation back in good old Europe today: I’ll ride the waves in the south of France in September :)  Check this out:  www.go4surf.com

Transformers

After being at an excellent Argentinean Restaurant Roman and I went to the Lowe’s cinema on 34th to watch this movie about the toys some of the boys might remember from their childhood. These toys called transformers are basically cars that can transform to robots and vice versa. The presentation was completely sold out which shows that this kind of movies seem to be very popular here in the US but I guess you have to be a true fan to really enjoy the movie. Fair enough – the action scenes were really well done which I was expecting from a producer called Michael Bay but I’ve seen already better ones e.g. in actual “die hard” movie. The story however was very weak and some of the dialogues even worse. I wouldn’t recommend it. Â
