SF day1: Alcatraz, Segway tour

Friday, November 30th, 2007

What a wonderful day in San Francisco. Our first part of the day was the 10 am tour to “The Rock” Alcatraz which is of course a must whenever you’re visiting this beautiful city. The boat takes only around 10 minutes to get there and after a short welcome speech of one of the guards and a little introduction about the rules on the island you get a very interesting audio tour through the former high security prison which was closed down in the year 1963 mainly because of the high maintenance costs.

As sightseeing always makes hungry we went to one of the best burger spots you can go to in San Francisco: In&Out Burger which is supposed to be one of the first burger places in the US as they already started in the year 1948. We had some really decent burger there. Go for it!

And then we did one of the coolest things you can do whenever you come to San Francisco: The San Francisco Segway Tour which means basically going through San Francisco on one of this futuristic vehicles through for over 2 hours. This was soooo much fun! I was really surprised how intuitive it is to ride one of those. After a short introduction everyone of us was able to go by himself without any assistance. And funny how many people out there take a picture of you when you’re riding one of those. You feel like a VIP :) Very recommended!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the captain speaking…

Friday, November 30th, 2007

Whenever you hear this sentence after you’ve boarded you know that something is wrong. I’m still not lucky with flying here in the US especially when flying American. So the captain from the flight deck made the following announcement:

“Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the captain speaking. One component of this aircraft is not working at all and it is very likely that we need to switch the airplane….”

And that’s what we had to do after sitting for 15 min in the first aircraft we had to get out again and then wait for another 45 minutes at a new gate and then get boarded for a second time. But at least the flight wasn’t cancelled and we made it on the second attempt.

We just arrived at our Hotel here north of downtown and I must say that it is not too shabby. Tomorrow morning we’ll do the tour to Alcatraz and I’m already very excited to see “The Rock” :)

For Roman: Packers lost! I told you.
But I’m very sorry for Brett Favre though….

On my way to San Francisco

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

Since I’ve heard only positive things about this city I’m very excited to go to San Francisco today. After a smooth day at work here in Glenview, IL I’ll go to the airport now ready for the 4 hours flight to SF.

The plan for this weekend is of course to see Alcatraz (”The Rock”), Napa Valley (north of SF, lots of good vine there) and then do some “sightdrinking” ;) We (a colleague from work is joining me) are also thinking about doing the Segway tour which is going on this futuristic personal transporter for 2.5 hrs through the city. I’ll keep you posted. Loads of pictures to come!

Home sweet home :)

This is the front door of the place where I’ll live pretty soon. I think it is worthy to be an official entrance for pumsti’s place, don’t you think ;)

Before the devil knows you’re dead

Tonight we’ve been to a theater called Angelika. It’s actually not far to walk there from our apartment. We watched this movie which I would highly recommend if you like movies with a weird story like e.g. Fargo and the kind of movies that go back and forth in time. Go and watch it ;)

Nice Saturday in Manhattan

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

Since it was such a sunny day today in NYC I had to get some fresh air and went outside. My buddy Manny (he is working for Accenture and also on the Reference data project at Allstate) picked me up (he’s got a car) and we tried to get a place at the highly recommended Clinton Street bakery but since it is always very crowded there and especially on weekends the wait time for a table for 2 was around 1 hour so we decided to go somewhere else. As Mr. Manny grew up in Manhattan and loves to eat proper food he knows all the good places in Manhattan and we want to Agave where I had some very decent Poached Eggs on Toasted Brioche with smoked salmon, fresh spinach and hollandaise with coffee and mimosa.

Afterwards we went to the Union Square Greenmarket where I bought some christmas presents. No, I won’t tell what and for whom ;)

As shopping makes very thirsty we went for – nope, no beer this time – it was rather hot chocolate to one of the famous chocolate places here in Manhattan where they make their own chocolate in house. It’s called Jaques Torres Chocolate and I had a very spicy and rich hot chocolate there. Very recommended if you like chocolate as much as I do ;)

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

Finally I made it to Manhattan again. Yesterday was supposed to be the busiest travel day of the year. Reports told about 30 mio Americans travelling across the country. My impression was that waiting lines in front of the check-in and security check at Chicago’s airport O’Hare are much worse on Friday evening – the time when I’m usually leaving Chicago.  As I knew that my flight will be delayed – as it always is – I joined a colleague who has access to one of the airport lounges. To sweeten up our waiting time we had a couple of beers at the bar there ;)

My flight was showing up as “on time” on the flight information screen until it was time for boarding and then delays started. First delay was only around 15 min which I thought is not too bad but once I arrived at the gate it was already 1.5 hours. I still don’t get it why they’re not able to update their flight information systems on time and only show the real scheduled departure time only at the gate monitor. After waiting for another 1.5 hrs at the gate we finally got boarded but only to sit in the airplane for another 1 hour….but with 2.5 hrs delay I made it to LaGuardia (the smallest airport of NY) and took a cab to my future apartment where I had another couple of beers with my buddy John. The last night I’ve already slept in my future room as the girl who’s got the room at the moment is not here over the weekend and allowed me to use her bed in her absence.

Tonight I’ll celebrate my first Thanksgiving in the US and I got invited to have dinner at a place somewhere in Brooklyn. So far I’ve only seen such big “Turkey” feasts only in American movies so I’m looking forward to being a part of it :)

Beowolf IMAX 3D

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

Yesterday I went to one of the IMAX Theaters around here to watch this new computer animated movie about the legend of Beowolf in 3D. Since I’ve been to a couple IMAX movies before in Vienna/Austria I knew what I would have to expect from the 3D experience wearing this special 3D glasses and I must say I like the effects. The only problem I had yesterday was that I’ve been late and the auditorium was nearly full when I arrived there so I had to sit in the 3rd row which was to close to the screen. In an IMAX theater you are supposed to feel like being part of the movie but this was too much and it especially the fast action scenes were nearly impossible to follow.

One thing I don’t get though is that they had this setup of celebrities for this movie although every character is just the animated version. If you have an IMAX theater close-by go for it!

Bee movie

Monday, November 12th, 2007

I love animated movies! The price I had to pay for this passion was that I had to share the cinema with 100 childs yesterday but it was fun to see how much excited they were :) although I’m not sure – considering some language and jokes – if this film is really addressed to young kids.

Bee movie was written by Jerry Seinfeld and he is also the voice of the bee called “Berry B. Banson” which thinks that the current life in the beehive is too boring and wants to see something of the world outside. So he joins the pollen jocks on one journey outside where he gets lost. Hiding from the rain he meets a human girl called Vanessa (voice of Renee Zellweger) which saves his life and then the story begins :)

If you like animations as much as I do and if you want to see a funny movie about bees talking to humans and see behind the “scenes” of the honey making industry you have to see this one :)
