London

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

Since I have been on vacation for the last week it has been silent here on my blog. The last days I spent in London with friends and had such a great time that I decided to stay 5 instead of the 3 original planned days.

After arriving in London I met the special person I already mentioned below and we went directly to a pub (where else? :) ) and had a pint. Later at night we had a reservation at vertigo which is the bar on top of tower42 in the center of London (thanks Brigi for the tip – it was really an amazing view up there and we also enjoyed the wine)

As the weather was nice the next day we were walking along through London and along the Thames and had a very enjoyable day. At night I met some colleagues (Armanda, Ramesh, Jonathan, Norbert, Walter, Rudi, Christian, Stefan, ….) of the London office and we had some nice spicy Indian food and went to a club at Brick Lane were we had a couple of beers.

The next morning I had to get up early as we wanted to get tickets for the “first emperor” exhibition at the British Museum and as it is very popular and there are only 500 tickets per day available you have to stand in line at 8am already which we did. We were standing in line (see below) for 1.5 hrs – the first hour outside in the rain and the last half an our inside – but it was worth it. For me it was the first time that I’ve heard the story of Qin Sin Huang – the first Chinese emperor – and the terracotta army he build for his afterlife. I’ve seen the movie Hero but this doesn’t tell the real story. It was really impressive how detailed they’ve built this terracotta soldiers 210 BC. After having some nice Thai food we went shopping in the afternoon and then to Hyde Park just to recognize that it is too windy to walk around in the park which led us to go to the pub – again ;)

The last day for me in London started with a nice brunch at Borough Market (Falafel sandwich mmhhmmm) from where we went straight to the first pub and since it started raining in the afternoon I just went from pub to pub until I got back home at around midnight. First I stayed around Borough Market with Ji, Monika, Walter and Norbert and then I joined Brigi, Rudi, Sabine and her sister at Hammersmith at late afternoon where the original plan was to watch a boat race at the Thames but the weather was just too bad so we watched it on TV in the pub.

I have to say again that flying with Ryanair is more than just ok. It is quite cheap and they are always on time. I was so glad that I hadn’t to fly out of Heathrow this weekend as the new Terminal 5 they’ve just opened is more than a mess. 15,000 suitcases got stuck in the new automatic baggage system and more than 250 flights canceled. And the really sad thing about it is that Heathrow and especially British Airways were already known for their baggage delivery problems and they planned to get rid of it by opening this new Terminal. What a disgrace!

Thanks again Walter for letting me stay at your place!!!

It’s getting worse

Since JP Morgan Chase was buying Bear Stearn – the fifth largest investment bank last weekend, I think it is clear that the US economy is going into a big crisis. Mainly caused by the ongoing mortgage crises, Bear Stearn was having huge liquidity problems and JP Morgan bought them for just 2 $ instead of the market value of more than 30 $ a share. Oil and Gold are traded for record high values and the EUR is now over 1.59 USD. Looks like I really chose the wrong time to move to the US :(

Anyways…Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

30 minutes time limit…

Friday, March 14th, 2008

After having a frustrating day at work I hit the gym in the evening yesterday to get rid of my bad thoughts. Usually I go there in the morning around 6 am as I like to some workout before going to work since it just feels like a better start of the day if you are doing some workout before going to the office and sit there all day long. Anyways, in the evening it’s of course more crowded than in the morning but yesterday I just needed it. Saying that I went to the treadmill (I got the last free one) and started running with the motivation to run for 1 hour but what I didn’t know is the following: If it is that crowded and there is a line of people waiting for treadmills the time limit is 30 minutes. WTF? So after 30 minutes one of the trainers came to tell me that I have to get off….I guess that is the tradeoff for a gym that only costs 400 bucks a year :(   From now on I’ll continue to go in the morning…

my new piano

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Here is a pic of my new keyboard that I got delivered last week. I’ve already started practicing and can play some simple songs but I’m down-to-earth enough to know that it will take me a long time to really play some decent songs. I’m sure that Steve will be a great help to get me better. Yes, it’s getting narrow now in my room but it’s worth it :)

Other than that there is not much new to tell. I’ve been to the Austrian cafe Steinhof in Brooklyn again last weekend and had a Jaeger Schnitzel which was really good. And I started to work on a new project last week which is keeping me busy but is going good so far.

Today I was lucky to get my shirts back from dry cleaning as they exchanged mine with some others (they messed up numbers 0987 and 0887). The number of shirts was correct and so was the first shirt but after looking through I noticed that all the others weren’t mine. Going back to the laundry I was lucky enough to get back my shirts as they were still hanging there under the other number.

Explosion on Times Square

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

This morning at around 3:45 am someone placed a small bomb near the army recruiting station on Time Square which exploded and caused some minor damage on that army building but thank god no one got injured. Official report that a Bicyclist has been seen placing this not very sophisticated device near the station. Although no one got hurt this time such events always bring the danger of terror attacks back in mind….

nice compliment

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

A regular reader of my blog was asking me today if I’ve discovered the source of youth as he thinks I’m looking younger and younger on the pics out here. I know that most of you will disagree (yes fair enough, I’ve got a lot of gray hairs and I’m getting 40 soon ;) ) but it feels good to get a compliment like that. And overall you are just as old as you feel you are, right?

Austrian Cafe “Steinhof”

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

As it was highly recommended to me Ramona, Roman and me went to Brooklyn today to try out Cafe Steinhof where they are serving Austrian food. It took us a little while to get there as the F-train wasn’t going it’s usual route and we had to switch to a shuttle bus. But the great food was totally worth the trip. I had chicken consommés with slice crepes (”Fritattensuppe”), Austrian beef gulasch and a Viennese Iced coffee with vanilla ice. Thanks Mark for the recommendation. It was really a pleasure eating there and as Austrian I can highly recommend it too!

Tapas and clubbing

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

Yesterday night we went to a place called tiapol where I had the best Spanish tapas of NYC so far. We got really great food there and some very good Sangria as well. It is a very small place and it was very crowded but I would highly recommend it.

Afterwards we went clubbing to one of the biggest clubs in Manhattan called Pacha. Yes it is called as the famous club in Ibiza and it is part of the franchising system having the two cherries as logo. We were invited to a VIP party as one of my friend knew someone that had rented a whole floor inside the club. Coming there we could skip the line as we were invited but then our IDs were photographed and we had to go through a security check were we had to empty our pockets and I had to throw away to fresh packs of chewing gum as there is no chewing gum allowed in the club. I don’t get it. Going to the floor meant to enter one of the most weired elevators I’ve seen so far which was one of this old warehouse elevators furnished with a lot of rugs on the floor and on the walls. The club itself was nothing special. Loud music (unfortunately a lot of hip hop music and not much house), a dance floor, couple of couches and tables and a big bar with waitresses in underwear behind it. The drinks were pricey and the “red bull” for the redbull-vodka was a fake one coming out of a tap and tasting awful. Overall it was nice been there once but I don’t have a big need going there again soon.
