The story of the exploding ketchup bottle

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

A regular Friday evening. Some friends and I hit a Irish pub at Gramercy park to have some beers and burgers. A really nice and old place and the burgers were supposed to be awesome. But here it comes: We were ready to go after the waitress put those huge juicy burgers on our table and I grabbed the bottle of ketchup. You would think a common bottle of Heinz tomato ketchup. Common? Well not like that. I still don’t know what happened exactly but after I opened that bottle of ketchup it was like I would have opened a champagne bottle. The whole thing was under immense pressure and the ketchup just came out like crazy. I and the guys next to me were full of ketchup. I was really scared that they are going to kill me since they were wearing nice bright pants that were ruined at least for that night. I was just happy that I was wearing a black shirt as I would have looked like a mass murderer if I would have worn a white shirt full of ketchup. It took us all a couple of beers to get over that shock and I guess I would have enjoyed the burger a little bit more without that event. I got it at least for free. Be careful with those ketchup bottles!

Snow Leopard

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

IMG_5444Apple released their new Mac OS X Version 10.6 codename “Snow Leopard” and promised more stability and performance. 2 major improvements that most other software companies always trying to achieve but usually trade it on their roadmap for new or updated features. I have to say that I got a little bit frustrated with Safari 4 recently since it crashed at least once a day for me. That was one of the reasons why I was really looking forward to installing this new version. The install went – as expected from Apple – pretty smooth and my Macbook Pro was updated within an hour. The first impression is very good. Safari seems to be more stable and faster, all my applications (with one exception but the developer is already aware of this problem) are working fine and overall the system appears to be more responsive.

District 9

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

After being recommended to me by a colleague I had to watch District 9, a science fiction movie about Aliens living in a slum on planet earth. Peter Jackson, the genius that directed the lord of the rings trilogy, gave his name for that movie as producer but the writer and director is actually Neill Blomkamp. The short resume would be that it’s a weird movie but I guess you can tell that already by watching the preview. The opening movie was very successful and it has already brought twice the revenue of what the production costs have been. The style of the movie is a mixture between a documentary and action movie and it was much more “bloody” that I anticipated. It has a huge symbolic character. First of all it plays in Johannesburg and deals with the concept of Apartheid. Then it shows what happens when a minority is being treated unfair and what side effects can occur in this scenario. The major point that the film is trying to make though is what happens if someone suddenly unwillingly changes sides. I think there will be strong opinions about that movie and some people might think that the story is kind of too simple but I really enjoyed watching it.

Traveling back to New York

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

I am already back in NY after my short but nice Austrian vacation. It was the first time that I went back to Austria in summer since I have moved to the US. And it was kind of hard this time to go back because it really felt nice to enjoy the pool in the sun at my parents place and do BBQ in the garden. But the trip back was full of experiences this time: When I got to Vienna airport after I returned my rental car I had to go from arrivals to the departure section which is upstairs. There was an old lady in front of the elevator who asked me very rude to come with her into the lift. I didn’t get it the first time what she actually wanted so I asked her and then she explained (still the rude way) that she gets panic attacks if she is alone in an elevator. I was very happy to help her out by going with her but I was confused why she said it that rude and in a very harsh way. Checking in at the British Airways counter (I was flying American Airlines this time and they partner with BA) meant to check in at the self check-in machine but then stand in line again like everyone else to drop off the bags since they didn’t have a separate bag drop counter. What a waste of everyones time. I had only an hour to connect at Heathrow for my flight to JFK and was worried that either I wouldn’t catch the connection or my baggage wouldn’t make it. I actually made it right on time but concerning the luggage I am going to tell you in a second. The flight to JFK was quite alright but I do not understand why it is always me that gets wet because a flight attendant is pouring my drink all over me. I swear I did not do or say anything wrong but it was already the third time on an American Airlines flight where I got a undesirable shower. Now to the luggage: We arrived in JFK on time after 7 hours and also going through immigration was pretty quick but then it took 30 min until the first bags appeared on the line and it seemed those bags were only around 20 percent of the whole flight. After another 30 min there were more bags but I still could not see mine. After standing there for one and a half hours people where complaining and asking what’s going on and we finally got an announcement that there were more bags about to come. Finally, after 2 hours of waiting we all got our bags. I still don’t know what exactly happened but my gut feeling tells me that they didn’t make the connection in Heahtrow and came with the next flight from there but I was really surprised how bad the communication was at JFK. At the end I was just happy that I finally got my bags as it wouldn’t have been the first time where my bags got lost at “Thiefrow”.

EDIT:
I completely forgot one thing. The former Austrian soccer team trainer “Hicke von Flanke” was standing in line behind me at the passport control in Vienna. The fact that no one was taking notice of him or even ask him for his autograph tells you how bad the Austrian soccer team was and is :)

Hoehenrausch

My home town Linz is the cultural center of Europe 2009. One of the countless exhibitions is called “Hoehenrausch” which was built on top of a parking garage in the middle of the city. Especially the observation wheel offers a great view over the city. Due to all the stairs it’s not very handicapped friendly and it was also exhausting for my parents to climb all those stairs. Also the artistic aspect of some of the smaller exhibitions there is still a mystery to me. Nevertheless we really enjoyed the great view and from my point of view that seems the main reason for the success of Hoehenrausch.

Bday in Austria

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Although flights were not cheap I made a quick decision to celebrate my bday in Austria this year. It’s actually the first time for me since I moved to the US that I’m enjoying a summer vacation in Austria. And lying at the pool getting some Vitamin D is actually not too shabby for a nice summer vacation :)

Here some pictures of my small bday party with my parents, sisters, nices and nephews (the bigger party is going to happen today). Way too many candles on the cake (some of those were fake and although I blew my lungs out I couldn’t blow them out).

Visitors (again)

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Since last night I have some visitors from Austria. Two friends of my sister (who denied to visit me so far – that’s a hint, Chrisi :p ) came over and are starting their East coast journey from here. They are staying for 2 nights and will then get a rental car and move on to Boston. I went with them to see Time Square – haven’t been there since my parent’s visit anyway – and the usual suspects like the Toys’R'us, the M&Ms store, etc. After that we had some beers and no burgers since they enjoyed their meal on their flight too much :)
